The Barrow Man Branding and Design System
The Barrow Man is a community-led arts project rooted in nature, seasonality and slow engagement. We were brought in to create a clear, flexible brand identity that could communicate the project’s purpose, connect with a broad audience and work seamlessly across print and digital. The result is a calm, distinctive visual system designed to support participation, clarity and long-term growth.
“Many thanks for this excellent and speedy work. We are both really pleased and impressed with your understanding of the brief and sensitive interpretation. We love it and have nothing to change.”

The Challenge
The Barrow Man is a place-based arts project rooted in nature, slow engagement and seasonal storytelling.
The challenge was to create a clear, recognisable identity that could:
Communicate a thoughtful, reflective experience without feeling vague or inaccessible
Appeal to a wide audience including families, local communities and arts participants
Work across multiple formats including print, social media and on-site materials
Balance artistic expression with clear, practical information
Feel grounded in nature while still being distinctive and memorable
Unlike commercial projects, success here was not about selling a product, but about encouraging participation, curiosity and connection.
The identity needed to carry meaning, not just visibility.
Our Approach
We developed a complete visual identity system built around simplicity, symbolism and flexibility.
At the centre of the brand is The Barrow Man silhouette, a quiet, recognisable figure that reflects movement, labour and connection to landscape.
From this, we built a cohesive design system:
- Logo design and multiple lockups for different use cases
- A full colour palette inspired by natural tones and seasonal change
- Typography pairing to balance warmth and clarity
- A flexible layout system for posters, flyers and digital assets
- Canva template suite (A3, A4, A5) for easy client use and scalability
- Print-ready artwork including business cards and promotional materials
- QR integration to bridge physical and digital engagement
The design direction intentionally avoided over-complication.
We focused on:
- Calm, spacious layouts
- Clear hierarchy of information
- Strong but subtle use of colour
- Consistency across every touchpoint
Alongside design, we supported the strategic positioning of the project, ensuring the messaging clearly communicated:
- What the experience is
- Who it is for
- Where and when it happens
- Why it matters
This ensured the work was not just visually strong, but understandable and usable.
The Results
The project now has a clear and cohesive identity that works across all applications.
Key outcomes include:
- A distinctive and recognisable visual identity
- A flexible system that can evolve across seasons and events
- Print materials that are both engaging and easy to read
- Stronger clarity in messaging and audience understanding
- A professional presentation aligned with Arts Council expectations
- Crucially, the Canva templates allow the client team to:
- Update content independently
- Maintain brand consistency
- Produce new materials quickly without additional design cost
The Outcome
The Barrow Man now has a brand that reflects its purpose.
It feels:
- Grounded
- Calm
- Thoughtful
- Accessible
- Distinctive
The project is positioned not just as an event, but as an ongoing experience rooted in place and seasonality.
This is a strong example of how design and strategy together can support arts and community projects, helping them communicate clearly, engage wider audiences and sustain long-term impact.
