Setting up Google Ads looks deceptively simple, but Google Ads setup mistakes are far easier to make than most businesses realise.

You answer a few questions, click through Google’s suggested options, write some ads, set a budget and you are live. Google reassures you along the way with prompts, tips and “recommended” settings that feel safe and sensible.

But here is the uncomfortable truth:
Google’s setup wizard is not strategy.

We were reminded of this very clearly while recently setting up a first Google Ads campaign for Eunoa.

At several points, Google’s guidance would have led us into a campaign that looked correct on the surface, but would almost certainly have delivered poor results in practice.

And that is exactly where many small businesses lose money.

Google’s suggestions are generic, not tailored

Google Ads is built to work for millions of advertisers, across every industry, budget size and goal imaginable. Its setup guidance is therefore broad by design.

The problem is that:

  • It does not understand your margins
  • It does not understand your sales cycle
  • It does not understand your audience intent
  • It does not understand what success actually looks like for your business

What it does understand is how to encourage activity, automation and spend.

That does not mean Google Ads is bad. It means the defaults are not neutral.

Where DIY campaigns often go wrong

Most people do not make one big mistake. They make several small ones that quietly stack up.

Some of the most common issues we see include:

  • Conflicting campaign goals
Choosing objectives that sound right but work against each other in practice.
  • Over-broad keywords
Traffic increases, relevance drops, enquiries disappear.
  • Automated features fighting each other
Smart bidding, auto assets and recommendations pulling the campaign in different directions.
  • Ad copy shaped by character limits, not clarity
Messages become vague because they are written too late in the process.
  • Extra features added “for more clicks”
Without asking whether those clicks are actually valuable.

None of these errors triggers a warning. The campaign still runs. Money still spends.

Results just never quite arrive.

Why this is so hard to spot

Google Ads rarely fails loudly.

What usually happens is:

  • Spend trickles out steadily
  • Clicks come in
  • Data accumulates
  • But enquiries are weak or inconsistent

Because there is activity, it feels like something is working. Business owners assume they need more time, more budget, or more patience.

Often, the real issue is that the campaign was misaligned from the very beginning.

What experience changes

An experienced setup looks very different.

It starts with:

  • Clear intent, not platform suggestions
  • Fewer campaigns, not more
  • Decisions made around business outcomes, not Google prompts
  • Ads written for constraints, not forced into them later
  • A structure that can be read and understood at a glance

Most importantly, it asks “should we do this?” before “Google recommends this.”

Is it ever worth doing Google Ads yourself?

Yes. For learning, testing and understanding the platform, DIY can be valuable.

But for lead generation, growth or tight budgets, the cost of getting it wrong is usually higher than the cost of getting it set up properly.

Google Ads is powerful. That is exactly why it needs to be handled carefully.

If you are already running ads and unsure why results feel flat, or you are about to launch your first campaign, a sense-check can save months of wasted spend.

Sometimes the most expensive mistake is trusting the wizard.

Google Ads uses automated systems and recommendations to guide campaign setup, but these suggestions are designed to apply broadly rather than reflect the specific goals or constraints of individual businesses.
